Abstract
About 4, 50,000 years ago molten rock the core of the earth forced its way to the surface and was broken through volcanoes. When the hot lava contained silica and cooled rapidly - it formed a glass as hard as a rock. The volcano glass is called obsidian. Thus nature herself created the first glass.
Thus, the process of producing glass is not a complex one. That can be done by using certain ordinary materials, which are easily available. According to the researches in this field, man was familiar with glass even before 5000 years. That is the Egyptians, more than 5000 years ago knew how to make a kind of colored glass with which they covered stone and pottery and sometimes made also beads. Perfumes and ointment bottles made of glass were used in Egypt more than 3500 years ago.
It was the time of the Roman Empire that the man learned how to form different types of objects with the help of glass. This period is considered to be one of the Golden moments in the evolution of glass industry. Later new inventions occurred and the machines replaced hands when the use of glass increased.
