Economic success and inequality of development in Brazil

Brazil has the largest economy in South America. It is ranked tenth in the world and its President, Lula da Silva, wants to consolidate his country's presence on the international scene. In this context we can ask to what extent Brazil can serve as a model for other developing countries. Brazil is a continent state that is approximately 8.5 million square kilometers.

This vast size, at times, can be a constraint, especially, in terms of transport. But their geographic diversity (of the soil and climate) allows a wide range of agricultural produce. Nature has provided Brazil with many natural assets. Brazil is the world leader for land and water reserves. It also has abundant mineral and energy resources (Amazon).

The country has 180 million inhabitants but its density is just over 20 people per square kilometer. This medium density has little meaning, since it hides huge disparities in population between the densely populated coastal strip and the interior, which is populated largely around the capital.
