SummaryResearch on the epidemic of obesity in the United States demonstrates that in the past decade, the number of adults and children classified as overweight or obese has increased drastically (Evans & Renaud, 2006). In particular, researchers have noted that at the present time, 15 percent of all children and adolescents combined are either overweight or obese. Because many overweight and obese children go on to become overweight and obsess adults there is a clear impetus for public health officials to be concerned with the recent increases in the number of overweight and obese children. At the present time, obesity costs the US more than $93 billion in healthcare costs each year and is one of the most preventable sources of disease that is currently present in the population. Thus, public health officials are now attempting to work with children to reduce the prevalence of obesity and develop a generation of healthier adults (Evans& Renaud, 2006).Despite the fact that researchers have been able to track the development and increase of obesity among children and adolescents, addressing this problem in terms of successful outcomes proves to be a pervasive challenge for most public health officials.
