The French film industry
The stars and actors who appear on the screen is only part of a film, and most is on the other side of the camera (thousands of people may be involved in the production of a film, the exact number depending on the importance of production and its resources) and also after the creation, on the side of the distribution of the film. This simplistic presentation of the movie business makes us forget that cinema is now primarily an economic sector facing many challenges. Indeed because of its political and cultural impact, the various actors have always tried to thwart the market mechanism in order to cope with competition from American films.
But more challenges arise for the study of this sector in particular through other audiovisual media and specifically the Internet that compete strongly cinema. The year 2008 was placed under the sign of the film, because the number of entries in French cinemas rose by 6.2% representing 188.8 million entries. In addition we can add that attendance of French films in the same way was up 32.7% to 86.20 million tickets. This dramatic jump has allowed French films to get a very high market share (45.7%) through the opportunity in front of the Hollywood productions whose market share is 44.5% in 2008.
To go a step further, French films were 54.2 million foreign entries representing 421.5 million in revenue. 1115 operating visas were issued by the Classification Board of films. Moreover, the French fleet consists of 5422 screens, chairs 1,072,206 and 2079 institutions. In addition there were 91 251 entries on average institutions and 34 989 entries per screen average and institutions.
Finally, at the distribution level, there are a lot of competition. But to name a French distributors: Pathe Distribution is the market leader with a market share of 21%, 138 including 17 new films released this year, Studio Canal is a follower with only 5.8% of market share, 112 films including 16 new, SND has 4.1% market share with 44 films including 16 new and finally Europa Corp with 3.9% market share, 39 films including 13 new ones.
