Abstract

Corporate India is waking up to the new millennium imperative of mergers and acquisitions in a desperate search for a panacea for facing the global competition. This is hardly surprising as stiff competition is, in a sense, implicit in any bid to integrate the national economy with the global economy. The ongoing process of liberalization has exposed the unproductive use of capital by the indian corporates both in public and private sectors. Consolidation through mergers and acquisitions (M&As) is considered one of the best ways of restructuring for effectively facing the competitive pressures.

There is little doubt that in the emerging scenario of globalization and competition, the big companies enjoying economies of scale and name recognition are bound to be spread across more regions and market segments. Japan is planning to go ahead with a scheme of planned mergers to stabilize its troubled financial sector. As a part of the financial sector restructuring for optimal efficiency, there already is a growing trend towards consolidation through merger and acquisition worldwide.
