Abstract
A wetland can be described ecologically in terms of the varying biological processes it encompasses, and specifically on the basis of its biotic/abiotic interactions. The Ministry of Natural Resources focuses specifically on the diversity and productivity of an environment to determine its classification. From a biological perspective, this implies that any land that actively participates or is comprised of these factors, is therefore a wetland by designation (Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, 2008). The productivity of an environment is essentially a function of sunlight, as energy is transferred throughout the trophic levels of its ecosystem. This energy transformation is facilitated through the formation of carbohydrates; actively locking this energy within its chemical structure (Cahill and Molles, 2008). The relative rate at which an ecosystem can synthesis this energy is described in terms of the total grams of carbon produced per meter squared of landscape, on a daily basis.
