Abstract
Global poverty is one of the most crushing problems of the modern world. Poor financial infrastructure development in rural areas making the things further worst. Because the local money lenders extend this facility with vested interest and exploitation level is very high. In many developing countries microfinance is being looked upon as a successful means of alleviating poverty and it brings better opportunities to the rural community. The major form of microfinance in India is based on women's Self-Help Groups (SHG) and women Thrift and Credit Groups (WTCG). But many studies indicate that the poor still lack access to credit at crucial times which forces them into the vicious cycle of moneylenders who charge very high interest rate on money lending. The paper deals with the initiatives and initial assessment of such activities in rural villages of Ratlam district (M.P.) that is dominated by the tribal communities. The paper also discusses the possible steps for improvement of the programme to make it more efficient and reach the needed population of the rural areas.
