Japan: geographical and economic presentation
Japan is an island nation in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies east of the Sea of Japan, China and Russia (Kuril Islands) and north of Taiwan. It is sometimes called "Land of the Rising Sun." Japan forms an archipelago of 6852 mountainous and volcanic islands. The four largest are: - Hokkaido (79,000 square kilometers) - Honshu (227,000 sq km), which is the largest and most populous with 105 million inhabitants, - Shikoku (18 000 km ²), the island of the inland sea, and - Kyushu (36 000 km ²), facing South Korea. They alone account for 97% of land area. Greater Tokyo is the largest metropolitan area in the world with over 30 million people. Only 20% of the land is habitable, as the mountains occupy 71% of it.
