Abstract
Like several other goods, which require a market place for buyers & sellers to come together, shares, too need a market where they can be sold & bought. The markets where shares are sold bought are either primary market or secondary market. The primary stock market is the place where the new offering by companies is made either as Initial Public Offer (ipo) or Right Issue. ipo's are offerings made by the companies for the first time while rights are offerings made to the existing shareholders. Investors who prefer to invest in primary issues are called Stags. Secondary market consists of stock exchange where the buy or sell orders are matched in the Organized manner. There are at present 23 stock exchanges in india and are governed by the Securities Contract (Regulation) Act (SCRA). Among these 23 stock exchanges BSE & NSE are the popular stock exchange and contribute over 75% of the trading. In 1875, 318 people came together to become members of the stock exchange, by paying a princely amount Re.1, which today we know as Bombay stock Exchange. The BSE SENSEX is not only scientifically designed but also based globally accepting construction and review methodology. First complied in 1986, SENSEX is a basket of 30 constituent stocks representing a sample of large, liquid and representative companies. The base year of SENSEX is 1978-79 and the base value is 100. The index is widely reported to both domestic and international markets through print as well as electronic media.
