Abstract
Savings form an important part of the economy of any nation. With the savings invested in various options available to the people, money acts as the driver for growth of the country. Indian financial scene too presents a plethora of avenues to the investors. Though certainly not the best or deepest of markets in the world, it has reasonable options for an ordinary man to invest his savings. investment goals vary from person to person. While somebody wants security, others might give more weight age to returns alone. Somebody else might want to plan for his child's education while somebody might be saving for the proverbial rainy day or even life after retirement. With objectives defying any range, it is obvious that the products required will vary as well. In India, About 47% of the total savings are mobilized by the Banks through various types of deposits and schemes. The study mainly concentrates on comparing mutual funds with the other available investment options such as Bank deposits, Company fixed deposits, stock market, RBI saving bonds and Life Insurance. The key objective of the study was to find out the popularity of mutual funds among other investment opportunities. The research is been done under the guidance of franklin templeton Asset management pvt ltd, Bangalore. The questionnaire was prepared for which the respondents were people who earn more than Rs. 8000 per month. The research is descriptive in nature with a sample size of 100 earning and retired individuals. The sample type was random as well as convenient sample.
