Abstract

Reduction of hydrogen to low levels during production is imperative for the control of hydrogen related defects in finished aluminum products. This is particularly important for cast auto components such as cylinder head and piston which undergo critical service conditions and require structural integrity of a high order. Many of the practical difficulties encountered by gravity die casters in the manufacturing of such components can be ascribed to inadequate control of hydrogen content in the melt and the most commonly found deleterious effect of hydrogen in aluminum is pin hole and porosity.
