Major ports in East Asia and Maritime trade
The past twenty years have witnessed a massive growth of maritime traffic. Trade via the sea has increased by leaps and bounds with the globalization of trade.
The period between 1970 and 2000 saw an increase of 67%( which is 2.3% per year)and then increased to 7.11 billion tons in 2006.
The Merchant fleet tonnage multiplied by 2.5 over the same period. Maritime trade accounts for 75% of world trade by weight and 66% in value. Maritime transport is growing this much because it is inexpensive. It is also the safest and least polluting mode of transport in the world. The expansion of maritime trade is due to the economic activities of the USA, Japan and China.
In this paper we study the growth of Asia and its association with maritime trade.
