Abstract

The major goal of any sports coach is to maximise the potential of the individuals or performers. This unit helps you learn the roles, skills and qualities of a successful sports coach and the knowledge and responsibilities of a sports coach are covered.

Historically sport coaching has progressed as a position in parallel to the growth of competitive and professional sports. Coaches are mostly driven through need for achievement because their effectiveness will be assessed largely through results. Most sport coaches in the UK are unpaid and voluntary and consequently their employment status is low.

The coach must adopt the role of strategy maker. New and creative strategies may lead to innovation to individual and team performance. coaches often find that performers trust them and close relationships form, which can develop into friendship. There are problems associated with this as far as objectivity and ethics are concerned, a coach must be careful to develop appropriate relationships and both teachers and coaches have found that sometimes familiarity can breed contempt.
