Abstract
network processors supports multi-threading to allow concurrency among multiple packet processing tasks. Applications running on the network processors will have different register requirements across threads at different program points. Also register architecture of IXP network processor is very special. In particular, the general purpose registers (GPRs) are split into two banks. This gives the rise to the dual bank register assignment problem. Here in this work we try to solve the dual bank register assignment problem by improving the performance of network processor.
A network processor is an application-specific instruction processor (ASIP) for the networking application domain with architectural features and/or special circuitry for packet processing at wire speed. The network processor differs from traditional microprocessors in three ways.
