Abstract

hotel industry is the oldest commercial endeavors in the world. It is understood that the first hotel goes back to the 6th century BC, and were the services of the urge to travel, spurred by the invention of the 'wheel'. The earliest inns were ventures by husband and wife teams who provided large halls for travelers to make their own beds and sleep on the floor. They also provided modest wholesome food, thirst quenchers like wine, port etc. and stabling facilities. The host's wife or his wench provided entertainment and recreation. The husband and wife team and his family provided the entire cooking service and recreation.

The real growth of the modern hotel industry took place in the USA beginning with the opening of City hotel in New York in 1794. This was the first building specially erected for hotel purposes. This eventually led to great competition between different cities and resulted in frenzied hotel building activity.

In 1829, an ancient named Isaiah Rogers undertook the construction of a large new hotel in Boston. His creation Tremont House was the earliest first class hotel in America and that became a signpost for the revolution in the hospitality industry. Tremont house was the first hotel to offer private rooms with locking doors. In 1874, William Chapman Ralston built a luxurious hotel in San Francisco.
